Tennis Practice with Taylor Ingber

Tennis player Taylor Ingber ties her shoes before taking to the courts at Tamaques Park in Westfield, N.J. A sophomore biology major at the University of Maryland, Ingber used to play here in her varsity high school tennis days.

Ingber warms up for practice by bouncing a tennis ball with her racquet. Ingber has been playing tennis since elementary school, inspired by her dad, who is also a tennis player.

Ingber jumps to hit a flying tennis ball, just missing it. While she practices over spring break solo, Ingber usually plays doubles, and sometimes practices playing singles against her dad.

Ingber takes a break to stretch and poses on the courts at Tamaques Park. While she used to play club tennis her freshman year, she had to take a break to keep up with her pre-med coursework at school.

Personality Portrait Assignment- Roller Derby

Ida Burton is the president of the Red Bank Roller Vixens, a roller derby league started in New Jersey in 2011. Burton is known on the track by her "derby name," Duchess Down Lo.

Burton started playing roller derby in 2010. Here, she poses for a photo in Tab Ramos Sports Center in Matawan, NJ, where her team held practice on March 23.

Burton prepares to hip check her teammate, Anita Guinness, in a practice drill. Burton's main position on the team is as a pivot, which is a category of a defensive player whose responsibilities include calling plays and setting the team's pace.

Burton skates around the Tab Ramos indoor rink to warm up for a drill. The Roller Vixens are practicing in preparation for their first game of the season on April 12.

Burton said that her favorite things about roller derby are the aggression, the speed, and the team aspect of the sport. "And it keeps me young, that's for sure," said Burton.

Quantum Physics With Ian McAdams

Senior physics major Ian McAdams contemplates a homework problem for his quantum physics class.  He was studying for a big exam later in the week.

McAdams laughs a little as he attempts to explain the problem he's trying to solve in the John S. Toll Physics Building.

McAdams can often be found late at night in the physics building doing his homework.  He said he prefers to have a lot of space to work out problems, and most of the classrooms are usually empty then.

McAdams takes a break from studying to pose in front of his work.  He recently applied for internships with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the Department of the Interior.

McAdams reaches to fix a mistake in his work on a lecture hall's blackboards.  He said he is most interested in doing work in gravitation theory after he graduates.

Cooking with Eric Epstein

Senior University of Maryland student Eric Epstein begins preparing for one of his favorite meals. Here, Epstein poses as he cuts an onion.

 Epstein flips vegetables for his special dish, mac'n cheese delight. He learned the proper flipping technique at Carver Center for Arts and Technology. 

Epstein adds his secret cheese sauce recipe to the bowl of macaroni, vegetables, and jerk chicken. This is the final step before everything goes into the oven for baking.

Epstein poses with his finish product. He has been cooking for nearly 6 years and aspires to open a restaurant after college.

The mac'n cheese delight is out of the oven and ready to be served. Epstein always makes plenty of food for all of his friends.

Matt Angelico: UMD Quidditch Team

Matt Angelico, Quidditch team member and sophomore University of Maryland student, is caught in action as he throws the ball through the hoop.

Here, Angelico poses with his broom. The University of Maryland Quidditch team has been on campus since 2009.

Angelico peers through the hoop as he poses for this photograph. The team practices three times a week for two hours at a time. Practices begin as soon as classes start and are held in any weather condition.

An Afternoon With An Ice Skater - Victoria Wienholt

Alison Larcombe glides into a layback spin. Larcombe began ice skating when she was six.

With a swift change of foot, Larcombe transitions into a back spin.

Larcombe enters a spread eagle on her inside edge.  

Larcombe has gone through six pairs of skates over the course of her training.
She now wears the brand SP-Teri.
