Portrait Assignment Caroline Cummings

Sidney Hui is a junior Marketing major at the Robert H. Smith School of Business and she recently became the student brand manager for Vita Coco coconut water.

As student brand manager, Hui promotes Vita Coco's brand all throughout University of Maryland's College Park campus through product sampling, seeding, and extensive social media marketing efforts.

Hui gets a delivery to the Alpha Xi Delta chapter house were she lives once a month, usually of about 100 boxes of twelve. She manages to store them all in her bedroom she shares with three other girls.

In a typical shipment Hui receives a variety of the company's products, from its Café brand to its flavored coconut waters. The Café brand, featuring regular espresso and mocha flavors, is especially popular among students since it contains natural sugars and has more caffeine and energy than a RedBull.

In addition to her work with Vita Coco, Hui is an active member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority and a Fashion Marketing intern for Unwritten, a business started by students at Maryland in which students can cosign their gently used clothing and accessories and sell them to the campus community. Unwritten also has a lifestyle blog Hui promotes via social media. 

Portraits of Eliza Paltauf

Eliza Paltauf, a sophomore, tunes her guitar and warms up her voice before playing a song in her room on October 20th. Eliza loves music and is an aspiring singer.

Eliza plays an original song she wrote, "More Than A Memory" in her room on October 20th. Eliza says her room is her favorite place to play guitar and sing because she can mess around with different chords by herself.

 

 

Eliza messes up a lyric while singing but quickly recovers and continues her song as she plays in her room on October 20th. Eliza has been playing the guitar for 5 years now.

Eliza plays another song she wrote called "Consider Me Gone." Eliza loves writing her own songs and she has even performed some on stage before.

Eliza puts her guitar away after practicing a couple of songs. She says she takes her guitar everywhere with her and even loves playing it on the mall at Maryland.

Diana Winter - Gymnastics Portraits

Diana Winter, a senior kinesiology major, is a member of the club gymnastics team at the University of Maryland.  She walks in a handstand as part of the team's warmup exercises at a practice on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014.

Winter poses for a photo while putting chalk on her grips before her bar workout. The combination of chalk and water on the leather grips helps her reduce friction on her hands during her routine.

Winter hits a pose just before her dismount during her beam routine. "Beam is my favorite because it's probably my best event," Winter said.

Winter holds her chin above the bar in a piked position during part of the team's group conditioning regimen.  The exercise targets and strengthens muscles in her arms and stomach.

Winter stretches at the end of practice to cool her muscles down. "I'm getting old, so if I don't stretch at the end, I feel it in the morning," Winter said.

Portraits of Warren Griffiths

Warren Griffiths, a sophomore anthropology major, poses for a photograph at the Maryland Adventure Program bouldering wall. MAP offers free outdoor climbing experiences outside of Eppley Recreational Center and adventures to places like the Appalachian Trail and Assateague National Seashore.

Griffiths makes his way across one of the "easier" routes on the bouldering wall. Each route is designated by different colored tapes.

Griffiths goes for a spin on one of his favorite course routes. Unlike the actual climbing wall, one does not have to be strapped in, or belayed, for this climb.

Griffiths considers where to position himself next on the bouldering wall. 

This is Griffiths' second semester working for the Maryland Adventure Program. His work has taken him on trips around Maryland, Virginia, Maine, and other states along the East Coast.

Trevor Anzmann Potraits

Senior aerospace engineering major Trevor Anzmann goes in to run a layup at the Eppley Recreation Center at the University of Maryland.

After dunking, Anzmann hangs on the hoop for a few seconds.  He is a member of the Terps' women's practice team.

Junior journalism and government and politics major Grace Toohey smiles for the camera before she heads out to lead a tour Monday, Oct. 20, 2014. Grace says she loves working for Maryland Images as a tour guide.

Grace leads her tour around this university's campus while walking backwards. This is a skill Grace says she's mastered as a tour guide.

As parents and prospective students ask Grace questions about this university, she answers using her own personal experiences for reference. She tries to give as much information as she can to help the members of her tour group.

On this sunny fall day, Grace shows her tour group the beautiful spots on campus. Its a cold day, but Grace has plenty of Maryland gear to wear to keep her warm. 

At the end of her tour, Grace leads her group back to the visitor center where she's scheduled to show another group of parents and students around the campus. Grace says she's happy to spend her day guiding others through this university.
