The Songwriter

Catherine Cook, a sophomore marketing major, loves music and is particularly fond of writing her own songs. Here she puts lyrics to paper and begins to create her newest song.

Cook is a perfectionist. She searches the internet and inspects the chords of other songs to see which chords flow well together.

For Cook, writing songs is an orderly process. After writing lyrics and finding the perfect chords, she then has to find a strum pattern that enhances the song as a whole.

She has completed her meticulous songwriting process and now puts all the pieces together to get a feel for her masterpiece.

Cook shuts her eyes and lets her hands do the work. It's now nothing but her and the music. She wears a slight smile, showing her approval for her work.

Madison Martin
A Passion For Softball

Madison Martin, a sophomore pitcher for the Women's softball team here at the University of Maryland, goes in her locker at Comcast Center  to get ready to play the sport that she loves everyday.

Before Martin suits up she thinks about what she needs to accomplish today or improve on whether for a practice or a game.

Martin shows off her fierce pitching look she gives right before she pitches to the opposing team. She tries to strike them out before even pitching the ball.

Martin's love for the game gleams through the photo as she tosses the softball up in the air as she reminisces the first time she ever played softball.

Martin puts on her batting gloves and superstitiously readjusts the straps a couple of times before taking the plate every time.

Personality Portrait of an artist

Cheri Wang, a sophomore art and journalism student, is a jack of all trades. She usually works on her art projects from the floor of her room. Her most recent creation, is a series made out of clay. Here, she plays with clay in her floor studio on Oct. 27.

Wang kneads clay on the floor of her room. She says the carpet in her room is unrecognizable because of the clay, paint and other art supplies that are caked on it.

Wang's busy 19-credit schedule can be stressful at times. She juggles art classes, journalism classes and Chinese courses.

Wang works on projects for weeks before they are due and even still, she may have to skip classes to finish on time.

This design is part of Wang's portfolio assignment, due in the near future.

Personality Portrait — Juggling Jeremy

Jeremy Snow, a sophomore multi-platform journalism major, walks near Cole Field House after classes on Monday. On days like today, Snow likes to unwind by throwing around his juggling sticks.
Snow first picked up the hobby in 8th grade when his parents bought a set of juggling sticks for his brother. It was Jeremy, however, who fell in love with the recreational activity.
Snow is a member of the Juggling Club, a student organization that meets every Monday and Friday for jugglers of all kinds to practice and hang out. "I like to go when I'm stressed out," he said.
Though Snow's specialty is with juggling sticks (he's self-reportedly among the best in the Juggling Club), he can also juggle in the traditional way with three objects. In this instance, he juggles with a few pairs of socks to break up a study session.
He assumes a face of serious concentration while juggling, but Snow explained that the hobby is more about catharsis than making sure he doesn't bungle a throw. As soon as the objects return quietly to his hands, he seems to return to his goofy nature.

Personality Portait , Kevin Chao, Tennis

Kevin Chao gears up to play some tennis at the College Park courts.  He has played tennis for almost his entire life including in high school and on the club team at Maryland.

                 `
Kevin poses with a ginger smile as he is not used to having his picture taken on the court.

Kevin admires his backhand shot as it goes right down the line, and stays in bounds

He starts to show his true colors after playing for a while and lets his fun-loving and laughing side come out.

Kevin's final pose was done like this, because, he says, "This is all you need for tennis, that's why I love it."
