Painting with Katie Vogel

Sophomore psychology major, Katie Vogel, loves to paint. Here she is with one of her first canvas paintings.


Vogel sits with her assortment of brushes and acrylic paints. She typically orders her materials online as she needs them. 

Vogel poses with some of her many paintbrushes. She said a good brush is key to a good final product.

 Vogel's current project is her sorority paddle. She is meticulously hand painting an ocean floor scene in pinks, greens, blues and oranges.

Vogel continues working on her paddle. She begins touching up some of the work she previously did.

Personality Portrait of Audrey Parrill

Audrey Parrill is a sophomore at the University of Maryland with a passion and talent for drawing.



Parrill sketches household items for one of her art classes.  Parrill picked up her interest in art at the age of 8 years old.

Parrill works on multiple drawings for her classes at Maryland.  Parrill is an architecture major at Maryland.

Parrill stands with one of her prized pieces of work.  She used charcoal and smudging to complete this piece.
Parrill continues to work on different drawings throughout the day.  Parrill says she is able to draw for over 7 hours and not get tired or disinterested.

Personality Portrait- Tatiana Varela, Actress

Actress Tatiana Varela poses for a shot in Rockville, Maryland, her hometown. She has appeared in over 10 shows in the last few years and hopes to make musical theatre her career.
Varela recites her favorite scene from "Hamlet," a classic Shakespeare play.

Varela shows off her dance moves. She has been taking dance since the age of 3.

Karah English, Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian

Karah English is a Cultural Arts Specialist at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian.

English stands in front of a wall covered in portraits of native community members and museum employees.

English is part of the team responsible for museum public programs including movies, music, theater, dance, and a lecture series, all intended to inform museum visitors on the diverse native peoples from throughout the western hemisphere.
English is a Concow-Maidu native woman from northern California. Her work at the Smithsonian is inspired by her personal drive to bring awareness to native peoples, cultures, and arts.
English says her work with the museum is important because few people, even in California, know about her own Maidu people. The community is one of over 300 communities originally present in the state, and her family is part of three different valley Maidu communities with land in Oroville, Calif., a small town near Sacramento.

Student Filmmaker Jon Ryan

Sophomore film major Jon Ryan poses in front of a camera. He has been experimenting with filmmaking since High School. 

Ryan assembles the lens of his own DS-LR camera. He got the camera last year, and has since used it to shoot most of his video.
Ryan sets up a time-lapse shot in the backyard of the Gilchrist Hospice facility. Ryan is currently working on filming a documentary for the facility, which he says will be finished by May.

Ryan poses while examining his camera. Last semester, Ryan wrote and directed the short film "Choice," which was screened at the Maryland Film Festival and won an award for best male actor. 
Ryan poses with camera and lens. In addition to making films, Ryan also enjoys acting in them. This semester, he is cast in three student films, which will premiere at the University of Maryland Film Festival in April.

Taylor Watford- Personality Portraits

Alexa Watford cracks an egg as she prepares to make brownies.  Desserts are her specialty.

Arielle Amegashie- Personality Portrait of Sophia

High School sophomore Sophia Amegashie, 15, poses with her first guitar in Towson, M.d. Amegashie started playing at the age of 10.


Amegashie practices one of her original songs on the guitar for a show at her high school. Playing the guitar is a hobby for Amegashie, but says she would like to do something with music in the future. 

Amegashie is a self taught musician and says she learned almost everything she knows about music from YouTube. She taught herself to read music and play the piano at age nine, the acoustic guitar at age 10, and the electric guitar at age 13. 

The strings and inside of Amegashie's guitar, are in good shape considering the fact that she practices for hours.
Amegashie concentrates on writing a new song to perform in her high school's show.

Rachel Personality Portrait- Art

Rachel Ostrow, 21, smears her paintbrush into orange paint. Although she loves all kinds of art, she says painting is her favorite form. 

Rachel Ostrow, 21, says that art is her favorite hobby. She would never do it professionally, however, because she doesn't want to think of it as a job. 

Rachel Ostrow, 21, admires some of her work. According to Ostrow, she always finds  flaws in her artwork and constantly strives towards improving. 


Rachel Ostrow, 21, isn't afraid to get messy when painting. Sometimes, she wears a smock to protect her clothes from getting dirty. 

Rachel Ostrow, 21, has been using art her entire life as an outlet to let go of her stress. According to Ostrow, she doesn't remember a time  in her life when she wasn't painting.
