Portraits for Social Change (Mel DeCandia, Wide/Medium/Tight)

Wide
The Half the Sky Movement at UMD hosted "Portraits for Social Change," an art gallery event featuring portraits of today's feminist leaders, on March 4 in the Stamp Student Union Atrium.

Medium
"Painting is my vehicle for social change," Melanie Oppenheimer told a crowd of about 30. Oppenheimer painted all of the portraits on display, of women she had either met or heard of that inspired her.

Tight
Oppenheimer painted a portrait of Malala Yousafzai, which was featured at the gallery event. Yousafzai is a 16-year-old Pakistani girl who is an activist for women's rights to education.
